Incidence of Congenital and Hereditary Blindness in Korea



Abstract
It is believed that the incidence of congenital and hereditary blindness has been increasing recently throughout the world. We have had particular interest in this subject and made a survey of 3,134 blind patients.
For our convenience, we have categorized these patients into 3 groups and results were as follows:
1. The first group constituting 521 blinds who were accomodated in various institutions for blind in the R.0. K. showed the incidence to be 8.25% the survey was made during the period of Nov. 1958 to Dec. 1959.
2. The second group composed of 332 blind patients who visited to our outpatient clinic for the period of Jan. 1960 to Aug. 1962 revealed to be 5.72% in its incidence.
3. The third group consisted of 2.281 blind patient who were investigated for their blindness on the charity basis disclosed the incidence to be 6.31% .This study was made for the period of 1961 to 196
It is noted, during this survey, that the most prevalent cause of congenital and hereditary blindness was congenital cataract. next being infantile glaucoma.
In summarizing, though it is increasing, the incedence of congenital and hereditary blindnees is definitely low in comparison witf those of other countries.
